So I am actually writing an entry in this journal.
Of course I have decided to write about something that is world shaking in its importance. I write about "Superman Returns."
I went to see Superman Returns. I disliked it a lot because so much of it was devoted to rehashing a movie that came out over a quarter century ago. I dislike that a lot. If I wanted to see that movie, I would have. And in point of fact, I did. I watched it two days before I saw the new one.
Superman says the same line when he meets Lois Lane. Lex Luthor has the exact same evil plan but on a bigger scale. He asks the super computer made of advanced alien chandelier technology to "tell him everything" and he gets the exact same plan as before, only bigger. His plans are undone not only by Superman but by his soft hearted accomplice.
I also did not care to be hammered over and over and over and over with the idea that Superman was Space Jesus. Superman is not Space Jesus. Space Jesus is Space Jesus and Superman is supposed to be a guy that does his best to help people where he can with his abilities, not become mankind's savior. That was so wrong. Superman is not supposed to be some idol to be worshipped-- he is supposed to be a fireman that can fly. Something goes wrong and he tries to help people. I admit that he himself does not behave like a god but the director steers everything so you are supposed to feel that way.
I also did not like that a man was killed by a small child and that it is completely acceptable. There are people railing about whether Lois is smart or not or whether Superman is gay and nobody cares that a kid KILLS somebody. It is excused because the guy is a bad guy and probably a serial killer (mentioned earlier in the film). Still, what sort of message is THAT?
It is a dumb, flawed, expensive, lazy movie. Unlike the Spiderman movies and the Batman Begins movie it does not learn that the best parts of the character's mythos are the best parts from the comics and relies far too heavily on the idea that you wet your pants over the old Chris Reeve movie.
I felt horribly ripped off and I did not want to feel this way. When I saw the trailer I thought this would be really good and it was not. And that's a damn shame because Superman should be really cool instead of what we're given all the time.
I am hoping that the DC movies will maybe follow the Star Trek Movie formula and every other one will be good. Batman good, Superman bad, Wonder Woman good; like that. Crossing my fingers.
